Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma

Collection Container/Tube: Green top, lithium or sodium heparin

Specimen Volume: 2.0 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.2 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Patient should not clench fist during draw. Do not use syringe. 

2. Tube should be completely filled to the stated draw volume.

3. Place on wet ice immediately.

4. Centrifuge specimen within 15 minutes of collection at 5° C (pre-chilled centrifuge cup) for 10 minutes at 3,300 rpm. Keep tube tightly stoppered.  If not testing immediately, separate plasma and freeze.

5. Lipemia may be unavoidable with patients in liver failure. These specimens will be processed with a notation of the lipemia.
