Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Urine, clean-catch midstream
Collection Container/Tube: Sterile screw-cap container
Specimen Volume: 2 mL
Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL
Note: If Gray-top tube is used (with preservative) - minimum required is to the fill-line (3 mL)
Collection Instructions:
Males
1. Wash hands.
2. If not circumcised, hold foreskin back before cleansing.
3. Wash urethral meatus with cleansing pad supplied.
4. Urinate a small amount into toilet or bedpan and stop.
5. Urinate the rest of urine stream into the container.
6. Finish voiding into toilet or bedpan.
7. Place cap on container and tighten securely.
8. Label container with patient’s name, second unique identifier (e.g. medical record number or date of birth), date and time of collection.
9. Specimen source is required. Indicate midstream.
Females
1. Wash hands.
2. Use cleansing pad supplied to cleanse genital area.
3. Use free hand to spread labia apart during urination.
4. Keeping labia separated, urinate a small amount into toilet or bedpan and stop.
5. Urinate the rest of urine stream into the container.
6. Finish voiding into toilet or bedpan.
7. Place cap on container and tighten securely.
8. Label container with patient’s name, second unique identifier (e.g. medical record number or date of birth), date and time of collection.
9. Specimen source is required. Indicate midstream.
