Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Whole blood 

Collection Container/Tube: Two 5 mL Lavender tops (EDTA) 

Specimen Volume: Two tubes each

Specimen Minimum Volume: one 5-mL EDTA

Collection Instructions:

1. Avoid hemolysis

2. Label tubes with patient’s full name (first and last), ID number (DOB or MRN), date of collection and collector’s initials.

3. Include pertinent transfusion history: whether transfused within the last 3 months, and if so, dates and products transfused.

4. Include pregnancy history: number, currently pregnant, and if so, due date.

5. Includes Antibody Screen and, if indicated, Antibody Identification.

If positive, result will be reported as the reciprocal of the highest dilution at which macroscopic agglutination (1+) is observed.
