Important Note

Call the laboratory to schedule a time to bring in specimen. Specimens are accepted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (no weekends or holidays).

 

Specimen should be brought to the laboratory as soon as possible, within 30 minutes of collection, with 4-5 days of abstinence prior to testing.

Includes color, count, motility, pH, viscosity, volume, and screening and interpretation by pathologist.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type:  Semen

Collection Container/Tube:  Plastic screw-capped container

Specimen Volume:  Entire ejaculate

Collection Instructions:

1. Patient should have at least 4 days, but no longer than 5 days of sexual abstinence.

2. The patient should complete the information on the instruction sheet.  See Semen Analysis Instructions.

3. Bring instruction sheet to the laboratory.

4. Specimen should be kept as close to body temperature as possible.

5. Avoid exposure to extreme heat or cold.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Ambient.  If transporting in cool temperatures, keep near body to maintain temperature.  Do not use warm packs.

Volume:  ≥1.5 mL
pH:  ≥7.2
Viscosity:  normal
Motility:  >32% forward
Count:  ≥15 mil/mL

Color:  opaque, white, yellow, yellow-white, gray
