Methodology

Includes tissue processing, hematoxylin-and-eosin stain, iron stain, and additional stains if necessary for interpretation.

Specimen Requirements

Bone marrow, core biopsy, and smears are preferred

 

Bone Marrow
1. Label slide(s) with patient identification.

2. Prepare bone marrow slide(s) at patient bedside. Allow to air dry. 

3. Place remaining bone marrow in 10% formalin.

Note:  1. Package the peripheral slide(s) separately from the bone marrow specimens to avoid formalin exposure of the slides.
2. A pathology/diagnostic report and a brief history are required for processing.

3. Submit 2 to 3 well-prepared peripheral blood smears along with bone marrow.

4. Please complete a “Tissue Examination Request Form” in “Forms” in “Special Instructions” and forward it with the specimen.

 

Bone Marrow Core
1. Label slide(s) with patient identification.

2. Prepare touch prep slides of the core before placing specimen in 10% formalin.

3. Place core biopsy specimen in 10% formalin.

Note:  1. Package the peripheral slide(s) separately from the bone marrow specimens to avoid formalin exposure of the slides.
2. A pathology/diagnostic report and a brief history are required for processing.

3. Submit 2 to 3 well-prepared peripheral blood smears along with bone marrow core.

4. Please complete a “Tissue Examination Request Form” in “Forms” in “Special Instructions” and forward it with the specimen.

Reference Values

An interpretive report will be provided.
