Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following:
Preferred: PreservCyt® Fixative
1. Vigorously remove adherent cellular material from collection device directly into PreservCyt® fixative. Collection device (brush, spatula or cervical broom) should be discarded after use. ThinPrep Pap slides will be prepared at Alomere Health Pathology.
2. Label PreservCyt® container with patient identification and specimen source.
3. Specify specimen source, list LMP and complete questionnaire on requisition. Remember to label all containers.
4. Complete a “Cytology Examination Request Form” in “Forms” in “Special Instructions” and forward it with the specimen.
Acceptable: Conventional Pap Smear
1. Label polysine slides with patient identification.
2. Roll brush or spatula across slide to produce a thin, evenly layered smear.
3. Immediately place slides in 95% alcohol fixative.
4. Specify specimen source, list LMP and complete questionnaire on requisition. Remember to label all slides and containers.
5. Complete a “Cytology Examination Request Form” in “Forms” in “Special Instructions” and forward it with the specimen.
