Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type:  Scrape/brushing from lesion

Preferred: CytoLyt® Fixative

1. Gently scrape lesion with cyto brush.

2. Immediately swish brush into CytoLyt® fixative.

2. Label CytoLyt® container with patient identification and specimen source.

Note: 1. Specify specimen source on requisition and label all containers.

2. Please complete a “Cytology Examination Request Form” in “Forms” in “Special Instructions” and forward it with the specimen.

 

Acceptable: Direct Smears

1. Label slides with patient identification.

2. Gently scrape lesion with scraper or a non-absorbent, cotton-tip applicator premoistened with saline.

3. Immediately smear specimen onto glass slide with a single smooth motion when using a scraper and a rolling motion when using the cotton-tip applicator.

4. Immediately place slides into 95% alcohol to avoid air drying and distortion of cells.

5. Specify specimen source on requisition and label all slides and containers.

6. Complete a “Cytology Examination Request Form” in “Forms” in “Special Instructions” and forward it with the specimen.

The presence of multi-nucleated giant cells with cytopathic effect is indicative of herpes.
