Specimen Requirements

Serum and whole blood are required for this test.

 

Specimen Type: Serum or plasma for Hepatitis Bs Antigen;  RPR; and Rubella Antibodies, IgG Only

Specimen Type: Serum
Collection Container/Tube:

Preferred: Gold (gel separator) or Red (plain)

Acceptable: Plasma, Green top (sodium or lithium heparin)

Specimen Volume: 2.0 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1.0 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Allow serum tubes to clot completely. This may take up to 30 minutes.

2. Remove sample from cells immediately by pipetting.

3. Indicate whether serum or plasma.

4. Label tubes with Patient's full name (first and last), ID number (DOB or MRN), Date and Time of Collection, Specimen Source (if applicable) and Collector's initials.
 

Specimen Type: Whole blood for ABO/Rh Type, Antibody Screen and CBC
Collection Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)

Specimen Volume: Three 5-ml tubes

Specimen Minimum Volume: Two 5-ml tubes

Collection Instructions: Avoid hemolysis

Additional Information:

1. Label tubes with Patient's full name (first and last), ID number (DOB or MRN), Date and Time of Collection, Specimen Source (if applicable) and Collector's initials.

2. Also submit 2 well-made unstained blood smears labeled with patient name (first and last).  Protect from exposure to alcohol or formalin during transport.
